WELCOME LETTER
When a woman is diagnosed with
cancer, her world turns upside down.
I know. I’ve been there.
You have your support network — your
health-care team, your friends and family. But
sometimes what you really want to do is spend
a few hours with women who are on a similar
journey — to share stories, insights, laughter
and, yes, sometimes, to shed a few tears with a
warm and welcoming community that makes
you feel you’re still engaged in the joy of living.
That, my friends, is the gift that Look Good
Feel Better workshops have offered to more
than 70,000 women across Canada since we
launched our program more than 15 years ago.
Our workshop alumni have learned creative ways
to deal with the appearance-related effects of
cancer treatment, from how to
choose a wig or tie a scarf to
recreating the look of lost
eyebrows to brushing on
mood-lifting blush. And in
the process, they have told
us, they reclaimed their
sense of self and discovered
that when they look good,
they do, indeed, feel
better. A workshop, as
one woman explained
to me, is playtime for
big girls. I like that
idea a lot.
This issue of
Look Good Feel
Better magazine
offers you
a peek at
the energy,
enthusiasm
and outright
fun that starts
in a workshop and spreads to the world. We’ve
featured some extraordinary women, including
spirited Marie Borges, our cover model, who
came to a workshop to look good for her
12-year-old son and left feeling a whole lot
better about herself. And Christina Racippo,
who arrived at a workshop feeling nervous and
left feeling good — and today volunteers at a
hospital helping children, her way of giving that
good feeling back. And you’ll get an update on
our beloved friend, fi reball Erika Heller, last
year’s cover model and Look Good Feel Better
spokesperson, who talks about love, commitment
and her upcoming wedding. They are a
remarkable bunch, and getting to know them as
we put together this issue has been a privilege.
Our workshops — and this magazine — are
made possible by the commitment of member
companies of the Canadian Cosmetic, Toiletry
and Fragrance Association and Look Good Feel
Better program sponsors, as well as the 1,800
volunteer cosmetic advisers and hair-alternatives
specialists who give so generously of their time
to deliver the workshop experience. So please,
pour yourself a cup of tea and spend some time
in our Look Good Feel Better world. If you are
in treatment, we’d love to hear your feedback:
do visit our website and complete our 2008 Feel
Better Survey. If you know a woman who is facing
treatment challenges, pass along your copy.
